Restaurant hosts fundraiser for leukemia patient

On Wednesday, diners will be able to satisfy their hunger and help a good cause at Francesca's Passaggio restaurant in Naperville.
The Italian restaurant will donate 15 percent of its proceeds Wednesday night to Care for Kevin, an organization founded to raise money for Kevin Christesen, a 28-year-old resident of Canton, Mich., who was recently diagnosed with leukemia.
Palos Heights resident Pat Ross, Christesen's aunt, said she wrote a letter to Francesca's when she was collecting auction items for a fundraiser, and restaurant manager Danielle Laveau suggested hosting an Eat and Earn program at the restaurant instead.
"I was writing letters to golf courses and restaurants, and I love Francesca's so I sent a letter," Ross said. "I e-mailed this Francesca's and Danielle e-mailed me back and said she had a better way."
Fifteen percent of the proceeds from meals purchased between 5 and 9:30 p.m. will be donated to Christesen. Donors can also leave money in a donation box in the restaurant.
Money raised will pay for Christesen's medical bills, and he will donate any extra funds to a leukemia organization. Additional information about Christesen's organization can be found at www.careforkevin.org.
The fundraising dinner for Kevin is part of an Eat and Earn program at Francesca's. Francesca's Passaggio has been hosting one or two of these dinners per month, and hopes to increase the amount to two or three per week, general manager Joe Christiano said.
Francesca's Passaggio will host an Eat and Earn dinner for any nonprofit organization — earlier this year the restaurant raised $5,000 for a breast cancer foundation, and will host a dinner April 30 to raise money for an epilepsy foundation.
"It works out well," Christiano said. "It helps out the community and it brings in new customers who didn't know we were in this corner."
